Abstract

823,807. Internal shoe-drum brakes. ROCKWELL SPRING & AXLE CO. Dec. 17, 1956 [Jan. 13, 1956], No. 38370/56. Class 103 (1). In an internal shoe-drum brake having floating shoes 14 slidably abutting at one end an abutment face 48 and expanded by a fluid-pressure responsive actuator 16 interposed between the opposite ends of the brake shoes, automatic adjustment means in the form of a crank throw member 80, fitted on the back plate 18 and associated with each shoe, is provided with a pin 78 projecting through and of smaller diameter than a slot 76 provided in each shoe; friction means being provided for retaining the crank throw member 80 in a fixed position during brake-shoe return movement and for permitting re-positioning of the same during brake actuating movement to maintain a constant brake shoe stroke throughout the life of the brake linings established by the difference in the width of slot 76 and the diameter of the pin 78. The friction means provided for retaining crank throw member 80 in frictional contact with the back-plate 18 is shown in Fig. 3 and includes a pin 84 received in a free fit through an opening 86 in the back-plate 18 and riveted at 88 to hold washer 90 in place against a Belleville spring washer which is resiliently compressed between washer 90 and back-plate 18 to resiliently bias friction surface 94 of crank throw member 80 into frictional engagement with back-plate 18 to frictionally retain member 80 in its set position. Slot 76 in the web of each shoe is also elongated from end 100 to end 102 to allow for gradual floating shift of each shoe 14 as the lining 11 wears. Each shoe web 56 is formed with a projection 64 offset toward the back-plate 18 so that the line of action of return spring 62 is off-centred towards the back-plate relative to the centre plane of the shoes so that the shoes are biased into varying contact with back-plate 18 to dampen shoe vibration.
