705,810. Internal shoe drum brakes. WAGNER ELECTRIC CORPORATION. July 16, 1952, No. 17977/52. Class 103(1) An automatic wear adjustment device for internal shoe drum brakes comprises a lever 7 pivoted by a pin 9 to the shoe web 8 and having its other end adapted to engage an eccentric 5 mounted on the backing plate 1. A brake drum contacting member 10 is pivoted at one end to lever 7 by pin 11 and has its other end projecting through an aperture 12 in the shoe rim so as to engage the brake drum. The lever 7 has a part 13 having a serrated surface which is normally in locked engagement with the serrated surface 14 on a wedge member 15 urged upwardly by a spring 16 against a fixed thrust member 18. If shoe lining wear becomes excessive arm 10 is forced downwardly and inwardly due to its end engaging the drum thus causing lever 7 to pivot back slightly allowing wedge member 15 to disengage from the serrated part of the lever and move upwardly under the influence of spring 16 and so re-engage with the next tooth position. The position of lever 7 at brake released condition is thus readjusted to maintain the original shoe drum clearance. A leaf spring 21 acts to maintain the member 10 in its uppermost position when not in engagement with the drum.
