Abstract

579,108. Brakes. SCHNELL, S. Nov. 15, 1944, No. 22592. [Class 103 (i)] In an automatic brake-shoe adjusting mechanism'having a plunger member 26 in the brake shoe in constant contact with the drum for effecting the adjustment necessitated by lining wear, the clearance of the shoe is determined by a pin 24 on the shoe web 6 contacting with the arm 17 of a L-shaped lever 16 pivoted to the stationary back plate 2 at 19 and having another arm 18 with a projection 20 engaging a cam surface 21 on the lever 10. The lever 10 is pivoted on an eccentric part of a revolubly adjustable pin 11 which is clamped to the backplate, and is spaced from the arm 17 by a spring 25. The swing of the lever 10 is limited by stops 22, 23 which contact the projection 20. The shoe lining, flange and web are cut away to receive the plunger 26 which carries a plug 28 of friction material preferably slightly harder than the lining, and the plug is flush with the lining 8 when the shoe web 6 contacts with the bottom of the slot 27 in the plunger 26. When the shoe is retracted, the plug remains in contact with the drum, and the web 6 separates from the bottom of the slot to an extent corresponding to the desired clearance of the shoe. During brake applications, the plug 28 is pressed against the drum 1 with the same intensity as the lining, so that the wear of the lining corresponds with the wear on the plug. The additional outward movement of the shoe, consequent on wear, coincides therefore with a corresponding outward movement of the plunger 26 which will allow the spring 25 to push the lever 10 outwardly. This brings a new part of the cam 21 into contact with the extension 20 and causes the arm 17 to swing correspondingly towards the shoe. If the drum expands due to heating, the plunger 26 will be pushed inwardly when the drum cools, thus effecting an adjustment of the arm 17 in a reverse direction. The stop 23 contacts with the extension 20 when the lining is worn out, the absence of subsequent adjustment giving warning of this.
