Abstract
601,354. Friction clutches. REAVELL & CO., Ltd., and MAYERS, T. T. Nov. 6, 1945, No. 29510. [Class 80 (ii)] In a friction clutch having shoes on the driven member thrown into and out of contact with the driving member by means of a manually operable actuating member, the latter acts on the shoes through a toggle, the centrifugal force on which maintains the clutch engaged when the shoes are thrown in. As shown applied to a clutch connecting a driving pulley 1 to a driven fly-wheel 3, a pair of arcuate friction shoes 4 mounted on the fly-wheel are expanded against a spring 10 into contact with the pulley drum 6 by a toggle 7 whose central pivot is acted upon by a bellcrank lever 11 also mounted on the flywheel. The remote arm of the lever engages a sliding collar 19 which carries a manually-operated knob 20 prevented from rotating by a weighted guard 22. Centrifugal force on the toggle 7 maintains the clutch engaged upon release of the knob 20 after depressing it to initiate clutch engagement. The shoe pivot pins 5 are eccentrically mounted to provide an adjustment for wear.
