Abstract
347,329. Variable-speed gearing; ; friction clutches. FIPPARD, A. J., Hankow, Woodcote Avenue, Wallington, Surrey, and BARNES, E. L., Mount House, Mile End, Colchester, Essex. Feb. 4, 1930, No. 3779. [Class 80 (ii).] In variable-speed transmissions of the kind employing a continuously-rotating driving-member carrying a flywheel 1 and intermittently clutched to and declutched from a driven member, the clutch comprises a cylindrical rubber or other elastic bag 6 adapted to be inflated and deflated to effect engagement and disengagement by an automatic two-way valve 5 controlling pressure-fluid. The bag 6, when distended, presses friction-faced segments 8, radially slidable on a drum 9 fixed to the driving- shaft 2, into contact with a drum 10 on the driven shaft 4. An air-compressor x, supplying a reservoir z, may be driven from the shaft 2 or otherwise, and the valve 5 automatically operated electrically, mechanically from the shaft 2, or otherwise. The valve may additionally be operable manually and by a centrifugal or other governor to limit the speed of the shaft 4. A flexible coupling, for example of the resilient-block universal type, may be interposed between the flywheel 1 and clutch-member 9.
