Abstract

693,225. Clutches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and WHIBLEY, R. H. May 21, 1951 [May 19. 1950], No. 12625/50. Class 80 (ii). A radially acting friction clutch suitable for machine tools such as lathes comprises a driving member 3 with a peripheral friction surface 15 adapted to be engaged by friction shoes 11, 12 carried by arms 7, 8 respectively which are pivoted at 9, 10 on a member 5 secured to the driven shaft 2. The shoes 11, 12 are biased to engage the surface 15 by springs 16 and 17 and are adapted to be released by axial movement of a collar 22 on the shaft 2 against the inner ends of the arms 7, 8. This axial movement is effected by transverse sliding of a plate 24 slotted at 25 to pass over the shaft 2 and carrying projections 35 which co-operate with a conical surface 23 on the collar 22. A handle 36 on a pivoted lever 32 is provided for effecting this sliding of plate 24.
