Abstract
679,211. Combined clutches and brakes. STEPHAN, A. Jan. 17, 1950 [Dec. 2, 1949], No. 1160/50. Class 80 (ii). [Also in Group XXXIV] A combined clutch and brake mechanism comprises a split ring 12 carried by circumferentially-spaced radial bars 10 movable in guides 9 on a disc 8 secured to a driven shaft 2, the bar 10 at the trailing end of the ring 12 being connected for rotation with the disc 8 by a bolt 16 engaging a slot 17. The ends of the ring 12 are urged apart by an adjustable spring 20 so that the outer friction surface of the ring is normally in clutching engagement with the interior surface of a driving gear 3. The inner ends 11 of the bars are bent to co-operate with the conical end of a control sleeve 21, whereby the bars may be drawn inwards to engage the inner friction surface of the ring 12 with a stationary brake drum 27, the sleeve 21 being movable axially by a lever 26 against a spring 22. In a modification, the ring 12 is in two parts, each of two adjacent ends being connected for rotation with the disc 8.
