Abstract
379,921. Friction clutches ; operating clutches. JUNKERS, H., 21, Kaiserplatz, Dessau, Anhalt, Germany. Nov. 20, 1931, No. 32227. Convention date, Dec. 10, 1930. [Class 80 (ii).] In centrifugal friction clutches, the engaging force is generated by radially-moving centrifugal masses carried by a freely-revoluble member adapted to be coupled to the driving- member by an auxiliary clutch and preferably to be braked when disengaged. Centrifugal balls 9, Fig. 1, slidable in a spider 8, coact with converging coned surfaces 10, 11 on the driving and driven members respectively to bring the main clutch cones 4, 5 into engagement against a spring 6. A sleeve 7, slidable on the driving- shaft 1, carries the spider 8 and is pressed by a spring 21 holding the auxiliary clutch 12, 13 normally engaged. Means 17, 19, 20 is provided to shift the sleeve 7 to open the clutch 12, 13 and apply a brake 14, 15, engagement being cushioned by an adjustable dashpot 25 .. 29. As shown, the driven member 5 is slidable on its shaft 2, but the driving- member 4 may alternatively slide. The main clutch may be of the flat disc or cylindrical type. In a modification, a driven pinion 3, Fig. 2, is clutched to a driving-shaft 1 by a flexible annular friction liner 30 secured at one end to a flange on the shaft 1 and expanded by centrifugal rollers 91 acting through a split sleeve 32, Fig. 4. The sleeve 7 carrying the rollers 9<1> has clutch and brake surfaces 12, 14 and is shifted by a hand-lever 36, the clutching and braking pressures being derived from a spring 44 acting through a hand-grip 39 and rod 40 with wedge faces 41, 42 adapted to engage one of a pair of fixed slopes 43. The liner 30 may alternatively be secured to the driven member.
