Abstract

804,562. Friction catches. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Dec. 8, 1955 [Jan. 11, 1955], No. 788/55. Class 80 (2). In a friction clutch a disc 10 slidably splined on a driving shaft 4 is engaged by one or more pairs of friction pads 16, 17 carried by one or more calipers 11 on a driven plate 7. Each pair of pads is held engaged by a spring- loaded plunger 14 and is disengaged by the outer end of a lever 20 engaging a slot in the stem of the plunger, each lever 20 being pivoted on the caliper 11 and having its other bifurcated end actuated by a slip ring on a thrust ring 23 operated through a lever on a shaft 26. A set screw 28 in the stem of the plunger 14 engages the outer end of the lever 20 to provide for clutch adjustment. If only one caliper 11 is provided it is balanced by a weight 27. Alternatively, a second caliper may be provided, or the caliper may be annular and support a plurality of equi-spaced clutch-operating mechanisms. In a modification, the disc 10 is centrally apertured and is connected to the plate 7, and a pair of diametrically-opposed calipers straddling the inner periphery of the apertured disc are slidably keyed on the shaft 4. It is stated that known means for automatically compensating for wear of the friction pads may be provided. According to the Provisional Specification, an apertured disc is engaged by friction pads on a pair of rectangular plates slidably splined on the driving shaft.
