Abstract

544,104. Combined friction clutches and brakes. C-W ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., SEED, E. C., and PARRISH, W. R. Oct. 28, 1940, No. 15798. [Class 80 (ii)] In a clutch and brake control device wherein the clutch and brake members are arranged side by side on one side of the driving member, the actuating means therefor is situated at the side of the clutch adjacent the driving member. As shown, clutch and brake friction plates 20, 22 are splined to hubs 16, 18 fixed to a driven shaft 12. Co-acting plates 24, 26, are splined to a sleeve 28 fixed to a driving flywheel 10 and to a fixed housing 14 respectively. The adjacent ends of the hubs 16, 18 have screwed abutments 42, 44. The friction clutch is engaged and the brake disengaged by compressed air which acts on an annular piston 52 located between the clutch and the flywheel 10, the end plate 48 of the brake being connected to the piston 52 by rods 58 carrying springs 68. The latter produce brake disengagement when the clutch is engaged. The air pressure cylinder and piston may be replaced by an annular electromagnetic device.
