832,856. Clutch brake combinations. INDUSTRIAL METAL PRODUCTS CORPORATION. Nov. 11, 1957 [Nov. 13, 1956], No. 35024/57. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXIV] A clutch brake unit is operated by a single double-acting piston and means are provided for positive disengagement of the inoperative clutch or brake. A driven shaft 10 mounted concentrically within a driving member 11 and a stationary brake member 12 has a sleeve 15 fixed thereon by a key 16 and spring rings 17. The sleeve 15 has an integral radial flange 20 interposed between a double-acting piston assembly 21, pressure spacers 31 between the flange and the piston being sealed by O-rings 27, 29. Fluid pressure supplied through pipes 48 or 48<SP>1</SP> secured in a fixed collar 40 is led by ducts 33, 35 and 36, 38 to the spacers 31 to move the piston assembly 21 to the left or right to engage the clutch or brake respectively. Movement of the piston 21 to the left produces engagement of clutch plates 53 and backing plate 55, keyed to the sleeve 15, with clutch plates 60 splined to the driving member 11. Similar movement to the right produces engagement of brake plates 54 and backing ring 57 with brake plates 62 splined to the reaction member 12. Positive release of the brake and clutch plates is provided by shouldered release pins 65, 66 which are loaded by springs 72, 75, the length of the shoulders being such that on release the driven plates are spaced at distances slightly greater than the widths of the driving plates. Pressure fluid leaking within the collar 40 is collected in grooves 80 and drains through a pipe 83.
