Abstract
342,754. Friction clutches. UNIVERSAL WINDING CO., 95, South Street, Boston, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Searle, C. F.; 108, Forest Avenue, Cranston, Rhode Island, U.S.A.) Nov. 4, 1929, No. 33500. Convention date, July 26. [Class 80 (ii).] In order to secure gradual engagement of a riction clutch for use in winding silk, rayon, or the like, relative movement between driving and driven members prior to complete engagement is utilized to move a clutch member intermittently between clutching and declutching positions, and said clutch member is operated from an element initially stationary and driven with the driven member. An inertia member may be provided to make the engagement more sluggish. A driving disc 10 having a cylindrical part 20 formed as a belt pulley, gear wheel or sprocket, has a sleeve-like boss connected by pin-and-slot means 12, 13 so as to be rotatable with and axially slidable on a sleeve 7 freely mounted on the driven shaft 2. Drive is transmitted from the pulley 20 to an expanding clutch shoe 50 through a spring ring 22 which has a radially inturned end 23 movable axially with the pulley into or out of engagement with a pin 57 housed in a boss 56 on the shoe. The shoe is adapted to come into frictional engagement with the inner cylindrical part of a driven member 25 fixed to the shaft 2, the member 25 being in frictional engagement, through spring-pressed plungers 43, with a freely mounted inertia member 40. Expansion of the clutch shoe is effected by a rectangular cam member 61 having a lever-like extension 90 which may be urged into the engaged position, Fig. 8, by spring means, or in the preferred form engagement is rendered more sluggish by the provision of centrifugal means comprising an enlarged end-piece 94 associated with the lever. The shoe and lever are located axially by a spring ring 52 carried in grooves in the member 25 and on the shoe and lever, the ends of the ring being inturned into slots 55 in the shoe. The end of the lever 90 rests on the periphery of a part 46 of the inertia member, flats 47 being formed thereon so that in operation any relative movement between driving and driven members will cause the clutch shoe 50 to be intermittently engaged and disengaged, such action continuing until the speeds of the parts are equal when the clutch shoe will remain in the engaged position, Fig. 8. The member 20 is moved axially to effect engagement by the provision of a tapered flange 15 each side of which is engaged by a lever 75, 76 acutated by a hand lever 74 which may be spring-pressed into the disengaged position, Fig. 5, and to retain it in the engaged position the lever may be provided with detent means which may be automatically released. The movable member 20 is spring-pressed into either operative position by a spring ring 16, and in both positions the flange 15 is clear of its engaging arm, thereby avoiding wear. As shown, the drive is taken off by means of an expansible pulley comprising a split ring 30 which is expanded to increase the speed ratio by radial plungers 32 operated by a conceal nut 35 locked by the screw 28 and spring washer 38.
