Controlling variable-speed gearing.-The cable or band of the brake or other control actuating means described in the parent Specification is directly engaged by the centrifugally actuated segments. As shown in Fig. 2, the drum about which the cable 1 is wound comprises a series of segments 43 adapted to move radially in a groove 44 under centrifugal action against the opposition of springs and the cable which is provided with friction segments 43. When a pull is applied to the end 1 of the cable there will be applied to the brake or other control means connected, through the spring 49 and lever 16, to the other end of the cable, a force which in part is dependent upon the pull applied to the end 1, but independent of the speed, and in part is due to the centrifugal action on the segments 45. The effect of the device may be amplified by causing the end 1<1> of the cable to exert a pull on the end 1 as by a spring 51 and lever 50 engaging an abutment 48 on the end 1. As shown in Fig. 1, the drum comprises hinged segments 33, 34 which move outwardly under centrifugal action and are retracted by'an adjustable spring 39. The cable is shown as connected at one end to a brake block 41.
