Abstract

458,516. Electrically and centrifugally controlled brakes. BENTLEY, J., and GALLOWAY, H. L., Edenbank, Lenzie, Dumbartonshire. July 17, 1935, No. 20353. [Class 103 (i)] Means for controlling the application of a brake for hoists &e. wherein the brake is loaded as by a spring comprises an electric motor driving a centrifugal device which is connected to the brake operating mechanism through a resilient means so that by varying the speed of the motor a varying force is transmitted to the resilient means which more or less counteracts the load. The centrifugal device comprises upper and lower sets of balls 7 disposed between a stationary conical disc 10 and an axially slidable conical disc 9. Races for the balls comprise members 2, 3 keyed to the shaft 1<1> of the motor 1 and provided with radial ribs 4. The disc 9 is carried by a member 13 slidable in the part 22a of the casing 11 and between this member and a member 17 also slidable in the casing is a spring 23. The member 17 is screwed on to a rod 14 which is slidable in the member 13 and which carries a conical clutch member 19. Balls 25 are disposed between the member 19 and a casing 24 which forms the other clutch member and to which by means of a bridge-piece 26 the brake operating levers 27 are connected. The brake is applied by a weight. The balls 25 normally rest on the top of the part 22a so that the clutch is disengaged thus permitting the part 24 and the brake levers 27 to take up a position in which the brake is applied irrespective of the wear of the brake shoes. When the motor 1 is started, the centrifugal device first moves the rod 14 through the member 13 and spring 23 so that the parts 19, 24 are clutched together and pressure is then transmitted to the levers 27 tending to release the brake, the spring being compressed as the speed of the motor increases until the weight is completely overcome. The brake may instead be normally held in the " off " position and be applied by the motor. The speed of the motor may be automatically controlled as described in Specification 439,286, [Group XXXVII].
