Abstract

557,692. Brake operating mechanism. BENDIX, Ltd., and KEEN, H. G. Feb. 23, 1942, No. 2352. [Class 103 (i)] Vehicle brakes are arranged to be applied by two hand-levers disposed side by side on a common pivot and acting at different leverages upon a brake rod or the like through common floating lever or through a common chain and floating pulley or sprocket device. According to Fig. 1, hand-levers 20, 26 for normal and emergency application of the brakes, respectively, and mounted on a common shaft 27 are connected at their lower ends 25, 21<SP>1</SP> to a floating lever 22 through a link 21 in one case. The lever 22 is connected to a brake-operating rod 24 at a point 23 that is nearer the lower than the upper end of the lever and since the lower arm of lever 26 is shorter than that of lever 20 whereas the upper arms of these levers are equal, the lever 26 acts upon the rod 24 through a greater leverage than the lever 20. The brake may be applied by the lever 20 and the application be then increased by operation of the lever 26. A stop 48 may be provided on the lever 20 or other part to prevent initial application by the emergency lever. In a modification, Fig. 5, normal and emergency hand-levers 30, 31 mounted on a common pivot 32 are connected at their lower ends respectively to the ends of a chain 33 passing around a sprocket wheel 34 pivotted at 35 in a fork 36 on a rod 37 connected to the brakes and slidable in a guide 38. A suspension link for the sprocket may be substituted for the guides 38. The broken lines 34a, 34b indicate the position of the wheel 34 after operation first of the lever 30 and then of the lever 31 to the positions 30a, 30b respectively.
