221,555. Cloud, J. W., and Westinghouse Brake & Saxby Signal Co., Ltd. June 11, 1923. Compensating for wear. - Brake mechanism of the kind comprising a pair of levers by which the braking effort is transmitted from a fluidpressure cylinder to the rigging, the levers being connected by a tie-rod, is provided with slack adjusting means comprising a turnbuckle in the tie-rod adapted to be actuated by a lever the fulcrum of which is substantially coaxial with the pivot connecting one of the main levers to the tie-rod. The levers 2, 4 are respectively connected to the piston rod 1 and to the cylinder 3 and to the brake rigging by rods 5. A tie-rod 6 connecting the levers 2, 4 is in two parts coupled by a turnbuckle sleeve member 7 provided with a ratchet wheel 11 engaged by a spring-pressed pawl 13 slidable in an extension 18 from a two-part collar 12 rotatable in a groove formed in and by sleeves 15 secured to the sleeve 7. A lever 26 pivoted at 27 on a fixed bracket 28 is connected to the lever 2 at 31 or to the piston rod 1 and has its end 25 free to slide in a rod 23 which is free to turn and slide in the extension 18 of the collar 12. In an application of the brakes, the lever 26 and with it the collar 12 and pawl 13 are thus rocked and if there is an excessive movement the pawl slips over a tooth and turns the sleeve 7 to shorten the effective length of the tie-rod 6. The pawl carries a pin 20 by which it is further restrained and guided and by which it can be disengaged to re-set the turn-buckle.
