Abstract

223,421. Macdonald, K. Nov. 16, 1923. Compensating f o r wear. - In means for taking up slack in the brake rigging caused bv wear of the brake blocks, wherein the point of connection of the brake lever to the brake rod is automatically varied as the brake blocks wear, the threaded end of the brake rod c is engaged by a nut g formed as a worm wheel and engaged by a worm h mounted on an extension f<1> of a block f carried between the two arms of the brake lever a. The spindle j of the worm h also carries a ratchet wheel k engaged by an anehoring-pawl k<1> and a pawl k<2> carried on an arm l pivotally mounted on the spindle j and having pivoted to it a link m slotted to receive a pin n on a fixed bracket o provided with a threaded stud p. When, in an application of the brakes, the angular movement of the lever a is such that the link m engages the stud p before the blocks are applied to the wheels, the continued movement of the members a, f results in an angular movement of the arm l about its pivot j, so that the pawl k<2> slips on the tooth of the ratchet wheel k. On now releasing the brakes, the pawl k<2> drives the ratchet k and the worm h to rotate the nut g so that the brake rod is shortened. The stud p may be dispensed with, in which case the pin n limits the movement of the link m. The invention is shown applied to the brake rigging of vacuum-brake apparatus.
