Abstract

772,262. Cycle brakes. HERCULES CYCLE & MOTOR CO., Ltd. July 5, 1955 [July 6, 1954], No. 19718/54. Class 136(1). In a caliper brake for a cycle the brake blocks 17 are mounted at intermediate points in the lengths of levers 10, 27 extending upwards from fixed pivots 12 at their lower ends, the upper ends of the levers 10, 27 being moved towards one another angularly, by a cable-operated bell-crank lever 25 which is pivoted to the upper end of the lever 27 and to an arched member 20 extending over the wheel and pivoted at 19 to the upper end of the lever 10. The arched member 20 is provided with a slot 22 which allows lateral movement of the member 20 relative to a pin 21 fixed to the fork crown. The casing 29 of the cable 28 has an abutment 30, 31 on the member 20. When the brake is applied by a pull on the cable 28 the first arm of the lever 25 is rocked over inwardly and takes with it the upper end of the connected lever 27 so that the lever 27 is rocked inwards about the pivot 12 to urge the brake block 17 into engagement with the wheel rim. The reaction on the fulcrum 24 of the lever 25 moves the arched member 20 transversely and the other end of the member 20 takes the block-carrying lever 10 inwardly to apply the block on that lever to the opposite side of the wheel rim. In a modification shown in Fig. 3, the left hand block-carrying lever 33 is integral with an arched extension carried over the wheel and guided for lateral movement in a fitting 38 mounted in the fork arm 39. A bell-crank lever 40 is fulcrummed at 41 on the end of the extension. A pin 43 on the other arm of the lever 40 works in a slot 44 in the right-hand block-carrying lever 45. An abutment for the casing 50 of a cable 49 is provided by a fitting 51 mounted in an extension 52 of the lever 45. As shown in Fig. 4, some members of the assembly are duplicated to bring all the operating forces into a single plane.
