Abstract
463,608. Friction clutches. SCHULER AKT.-GES., L., and KNOCHL, L. Aug. 13, 1936, No. 22375. [Class 80 (ii)] A friction clutch arranged on the crank-shaft 2 of a press or similar machine comprises a split ring 6 rotating with the driving pulley 3 and adapted to be contracted on to a disc 5 secured on the shaft 2 on braking a drum 18 journalled on the hub of the disc 5. One end of the ring 6 bears against an adjustable wedge abutment 8 in the pulley, while the other end is acted on by one arm 10 of a bellcrank lever fulcrumed at 11 in the pulley. The other arm 12 of this lever is connected by a link 13 to an arm 14 projecting from a pin 15 journalled in the pulley, while another arm 17 projecting from the pin 15 pivotally carries a block 20 engaging a radial groove 19 in the drum 18. With clockwise rotation, the linkage, on applying a brake band 21 to the drum 18, moves to contract the ring 6 on to the disc 5, this engaging movement being so limited by a stop 24 that the linkage is not self-locking. A latch 25 carried by a pin 29 journalled in the drum 18 now engages under the action of a spring 26 with a notch in the pulley, whereby the drum is locked in its new position and the clutch remains engaged when the brake is released. A plate 28 is movable axially so as to turn the pin 29 through an arm 30 and thereby disengage the latch, allowing the clutch to disengage, the disengaging movement of the linkage being limited by a stop 25. The plate 28 is controlled through pins 48, by a cam 47 on the shaft 2 so as to disengage the clutch after one revolution. Manual disengagement at any time can be effected by means of a lever 51 acting on one of the pins 48.
