Abstract

643,581. Friction clutches. DANA CORPORATION. July 30, 1947, Nos. 20623 and 20624. Convention dates, April 12, 1941 and Nov. 24, 1941. [Class 80(ii)] Wear adjustment of a plate clutch applicable to tractors and of the single intermediate driven disc type is effected by relative rotary adjustment of a ring member 43, on which the clutch operating levers 40 are pivoted, and a presser plate 19 carrying circumferentially extending cams 48 with which the ends 45 of the levers, co-act. As shown, applied to a motor vehicle transmission clutch, preloaded springs are mounted between the presser plate 19 and an annular member 33 supporting the cams 48, so as to be further compressed upon operation of the levers 40 to engage the clutch. Coil springs 36 or stacked Belleville washers 79, 80, Fig. 2, may be used as the preloaded springs, axial lost-motion rotary drive connections 30 between the member 33 and presser plate 19 being provided to effect pre-loading and allow the spring action. The ring member 43 is rotatable relative to the clutch back plate 20 upon slacking off a locking gear 55, engaging teeth 53 accessible from outside the plate 20 for adjustment. The levers 40 have counterweights 67 to eliminate centrifugal action, and are actuated from an operating collar 64 by over-centre links 61. Upon clutch disengagement, the presser plate 19 is retracted by springs 28 until a locating surface on the collar 64 abuts the ring member 43. Spinning of the clutch driven disc 14 on disengagement may be prevented by a brake disc 72 attached to the non-rotatable clutch operating collar 68 and engageable with a co-acting disc 75 fast on the driven shaft. In Figs 3 and 4 (not shown) the cams are directly mounted on the presser plate and coil springs or stacked Belleville washers acting as before are held preloaded, between the ring member and an annular member rotatively adjustable on the cover plate, by axial lost-motion rotary drive connections between the members.
