Abstract

500,625. Friction clutches ; combined clutch and brake mechanism. SCHULER AKT.-GES., L. Aug. 11, 1937, No. 22133. Convention date, Aug. 11, 1936. [Class 80 (ii)] A clutch arranged on the shaft of n press comprises a split ring 5 encircling a pair of discs 8, 9 secured to the shaft within a driving drum 4 journalled on the shaft, one end of the ring 5 abutting against a projection 43 on the discs while the other end abuts against a lever 11 pivoted on the discs. A spindle 17 journalled in the discs has throe arms 18, 19, and 25, the first of which carries a roller 16 engaging the cam end 15 of the lover 11, the second carries a roller 20 co-operating with a cam surface 45 formed on a fixed drum 34, while the third is engaged by a spring-urged sleeve 24 slidable in a projecting part 21 of the disc 9. A spring-retracted brake shoe 35 pivoted on the disc 9 carries a roller 37 co-operating with a cam 39 on the spindle 17. A spring-rotracted lever 27, pivoted on a fixed pin 26, is normally held in the position shown in Fig. 3 by a pivoted catch 31. In this position. the shoe 35 is engaged with the fixed drum 34, as shown in Fig. 3, and the clutch ring 5 contracts away from the drum 4, as shown in Fig. 1. On releasing the catch 31, the sleeve 24 acts, through its spring and the arm 19, to disengage the brake shoe and lightly engage the clutch. The discs 8, 9 thus begin to turn, and, as the roller 20 mounts the cam surface 46, the spindle 17 is turned further to increase the clutching pressure until the arm 18 reaches, or passes slightly beyond, a dead-centre position so as to maintain the clutch engaged when the roller 20 passes off the surface 45. The lever 27 now returns to, and is latched in, its original position. Towards the end of the revolution, the roller 20 engages the cam surface of the lever 27 to disengage the clutch and apply the brake, the shaft 1 being stopped in a predetermined position by the roller 20 coming into engagement with the end 48 of the cam 45. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the initial engagement of the clutch may be produced directly by hand, or by pressure fluid, or an auxiliary clutch may be used to cause engagement of the main clutch. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
