Abstract
410,350. Friction clutches. HERBERT, SIR A., LLOYD, A. H., and HARRISON, H. T., c/o Herbert Ltd., Canal Road, Edgwick, Coventry. July 19, 1933, No. 20365. [Class 80 (ii).] In a multi-plate clutch for connecting a member 16 to a shaft 13, operating levers 18B coacting with the presser plate 17 are pivotally mounted on radial pins 29B on a sleeve 19 which is splined on the shaft 13 and is urged towards a shaft collar 22, accommodated partially within the pressure plate, by springs 20, which latter thus take up the clutch reaction. The levers are actuated by radial pins 32B on a collar 11 splined on the sleeve 19B, the pins coacting with the inclined ends 33 of the levers, which latter have flat parts 34B whereby the clutch can remain engaged without any reaction being taken by the collar 11. The collar 22B lies on a non-splined portion of the shaft and has internal grooves 24B corresponding to the splines, whereby, after being threaded into position, the collar may be twisted to bring the grooves out of alignment with the splines, spring plunger 25B being provided to lock the collar in its twisted position. As shown, one set of springs 20 and one actuating collar 11 serve for a pair of oppositely-arranged clutches A, B, arranged for selective operation. One of the keys 30 which afford the splined connection between the collar 11 and the sleeves 19, 19B is axially fixed in the sleeve 19B and extends beyond the end of the other sleeve 19A when either clutch is engaged, so as to indicate by the amount of its projection the spacing of the sleeves 19A, 19B and thus the amount of wear that has occurred in the engaged clutch.
