436,368. Operating clutches. BURGESS, S., 41, St. Vincent Place, Glasgow. -(Aktieselskabet Burmeister & Wain's Maskin- Og Skibsbyggeri; 9, Overgadenneden Vandet, Copenhagen) March 10, 1934, No. 7626. [Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXXIV] An operating means for a brake or clutch, more particularly for a brake operating a marine reversing gear comprises an operating lever 3 adapted to actuate a pressure member or spindle 10 through a spring 13 into or out of engagement with a brake actuating member 2, the spring normally tending to move the pressure member towards the actuating member and the stress of the spring being adjustable to substantially the same magnitude as the force required to operate the brake or clutch. The spring 13 bears on a part 11 fixed to the lever 3 and a slidable part 14 in which is adjustably screwed the spindle 10 which is locked by a nut 16. When the brake is applied, the spring is compressed and the yielding of the spring is indicated by the distance moved apart by parts 14, 17. The lever 3 is operated by a screwed spindle 7 and its movement is limited by a stop 18. Wear of the brake will be indicated by a lessening of the distance moved apart by the parts 14, 17.
