590,482. Fluid - pressure servomotor devices. BENDIX - WESTINGHOUSE AUTOMOTIVE AIR BRAKE CO. Oct. 10, 1944, No. 19531. Convention date, Oct. 5, 1943. [Class 135] A fluid-pressure servomotor device, particularly for operating the throttle valve 5 of an engine 4, comprises a piston 19 in a cylinder 15 and a diaphragm 36 in a casing 35, both piston and diaphragm being coupled by rods 18, 48 and a lever 55 to an actuating rod 7 for the valve 5. The main actuation is by fluid-pressure, from an operator's control valve 21 to the cylinder 15 but the fluid-pressure is also supplied to the diaphragm chamber- 39 to provide an initial limited movement to the rod 7 in the event of friction momentarily holding up the piston 19 in its cylinder 15. The movement of diaphragm 36 is limited by stops 51 and 53 and is so proportioned that the increasing fluid-pressure will overcome the static frictional resistance of the piston 19 before the diaphragm abuts these stops. When this occurs the movement of piston 19 tends to return. the diaphragm towards its central position. Return movement of the piston 19 and diaphragm 36 is effected by a spring 11 on the rod 7 on operation of the valve 21 to release the actuating fluid-pressure.
