710,180. Controlling vehicles. VLVIAN, J. A. Jan. 16. 1952 [Feb. 22, 1951], No. 4293/51. Class 79(5) [Also in Group XXXIV] Vehicle brake actuation is effected by interconnecting the brakes and the throttle control so that throttle closing movements apply the brakes, the braking pressure being varied according to the speed of the throttle closing movements. As shown the brakes are operatively connected to the piston 6 of a cylinder 5 which is connected by a valve 1 to a pipe 2 leading to a vacuum reservoir; so that upward movement of a valve spindle 3 causes air to be drawn out of the cylinder 5 into the vacuum reservoir to apply the brakes. The valve 1 includes a regulatable opening 9 so that on releasing the brakes the partial vacuum in the cylinder 5 is filled with air through the opening 9. The spindle 3 is connected by a link 3a to the cylinder 10 of a dashpot within which is a loosely fitting piston 11 whose piston rod 13a is connected to an arm 13 of a lever pivoted at 15. The other arm 14 of the lever is connected by rods 16, 18 to the throttle pedal 23 pivoted at 21 and having a return spring 22. Slidably on the rod 16 is a boss 17a of a lever 17 connected to the butterfly valve 20 of the throttle. The boss 17a is arranged between stops 19a on the rod 16, a spring 19 being arranged between one stop and the boss.
