Abstract

736,549. Controlling vehicles. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. April 16, 1953 [April 16, 1952], No. 10486/53. Class 79(5). A motor vehicle combined accelerator and brake pedal comprises an accelerator member 10 pivotally mounted on a brake member 1 and rockable against spring action by the ball of the driver's foot, the member 10 actuating through abutments 12, 13 a coacting lever 15 having a fixed mounting and connected to the accelerator linkage (not shown), the pivot 8 of the member 10 being parallel to the pivot 2 of the brake member 1, and the heel of the foot bearing on the member 1 substantially at the pivot 8. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2 the master brake cylinder 7 is operated by the member 1 urged by a spring 4 against a stop 5. At its lower end the lever carries a heel member 3 and the member 10, the spring 4 being stronger than the spring associated with the member 10. The arrangement is such that movement of the member 10 by the ball of the driver's foot about the pivot 8 towards the position 10<SP>1</SP> opens the throttle, the direction of the pressure between the abutments 12, 13 passing through the pivot 2, and movement of the member 1 in a clockwise direction about the pivot 2 by pressure on the heel member 3 applies the brake, such movement moving the abutment 12 away from the abutment 13. In another embodiment, Figs. 3 and 4, a brake pedal member 101 and a clutch pedal 120 are pivoted coaxially at 102, the pedals being movable into a recess 119. Pivoted at 106 to the member 101 is the piston of the master brake cylinder 107, the member 101 being urged by a spring 140 against an adjustable stop 105. Pivoted at 108 to the member 101 is a plate 110 for operating the accelerator by means of the ball of the foot, a heel member 103 being provided on the member 101. Connected to the plate 110 is a rod 116 guided in or on the member 101. The rod carries a roller 117 in a fork 118, the roller being engaged with a two armed lever 115 pivoted on a fixed axis 114 so that movement of the member 101 to the position 101<SP>1</SP> to apply the brake does not effect throttle opening.
