Abstract

350,762. Vehicle brakes. BOSCH, AKT.-G.FS., R., 4, Militõrstrasse, Stuttgart, Germany. July 9, 1930, No. 20762. Convention date, July 10, 1929. [Class 103 (i).] In a motor vehicle provided with means for causing the engine itself to act as a brake which however renders it ineffective for producing a vacuum to operate another brake, operation of the pedal &c. to apply the vacuum-operated brake is arranged to put the means for causing the engine to act as a brake in the inoperative position. The engine brake control means comprises a hand-lever a which displaces the engine cam shaft d the arm c and link b. The end of an arm h on the shaft g of the hand-lever a engages a slot i in the end of a link k connected to the valve operating pedal n of the vacuum operated brake. The link k is in two parts connected by a spring m. Thus when the pedal n is depressed the lever a, if in the operative position shown, is moved to the inoperative position against a stop f, the vacuum brake being then lightly applied. Further movement of the pedal to further apply the vacuum brake extends the spring m. The engine brake may be one in which by displacement of the cam shaft the engine on the normal down stroke draws in air through the exhaust valve and acts as a compressor or in which the carburetter is shut off and pure air is allowed to enter the induction pipe while the displacement of the cam shaft causes the exhaust valve to open on what would normally be the firing stroke.
