Abstract

277,542. Badertscher, O. J. Nov. 19, 1926, [Convention date]. Fluid-pressure.-A regulating-valve, Fig. 1, on a motor vehicle which serves for alternately supplying atmospheric air and the underpressure of the suction pipe to the brake cylinder actuating the brake has a differential piston 7/8 arranged in the bore 2 of the casing 1 to which an atmospheric conduit 3, a suction conduit 4 and a brake cylinder conduit 6 communicate, the differential piston being influenced by a spring 10 interposed between the piston 7 and an actuating-organ 16 adapted to displace the piston and controlling the braking action in such a manner that the underpressure in the brake cylinder is automatically kept constant with any adjustment of the valve. A spring 12 is interposed between the piston 8 and a perforated cup 13 for returning the differential piston into its position of rest; the spring 10 is stronger than the spring 12 and has an initial compression which approximately corresponds to the resistauce which the spring 12 generates at the beginning of the compression. The lever 16 is actuated through a throttle control hand-lever G, Fig. 7, and the movement of the lever G through the range g regulates the supply of gas to the engine from a maximum to the cut-off which occurs at the commencement of the range n. As the lever turns through the range n the arm 16 presses on the cup 11 and displaces the differential piston into a position in which the admission of atmospheric air from the conduit 3 is cut off by the piston 7; as the suction port is not yet opened no braking action takes place. If the gas lever is now turned into the part b of the range B, the arm 16 further displaces the piston 7/8' and compresses the spring 12 to open the suction conduit 4 to the conduit 6 to operate the brakes. The unbalanced pressure on the piston 8 now moves the piston to close the conduit 4 to the brake cylinder until leakage losses in the cylinder reduces the underpressure and thereby the braking action. The spring 10 then moves the piston to the right to re-open the suction port and maintain the braking pressure. For emergency braking the lever is turned directly into the position N, whereby the suction port is fully opened. The lever 16 may also be actuated through the accelerator pedal so that for a given adjustment of the gas lever to limit the maximum braking effect the control of the gas supply and of the braking is effected by means of the accelerator. The regulating-valve may also be acted upon by another actuating- organ instead of being actuated by the hand gaslever or the accelerator. Specification 267,889 is referred to.
