Abstract
605,274. Motor vehicles, controlling. DACH, M. Sept. 26, 1945, No. 25002. [Class 79 (v)] A safety device for vehicles or machines propelled by an engine comprises a means for applying increased resistance to the manually operated engine control, said means being normally inoperative but automatically actuated to apply said increased resistance when an unsafe condition exists, whereby the operator is made aware of the unsafe condition but is not prevented from continuing to operate the engine. As shown, the butterfly valve of an engine carburetter 15 is operated by a pedal 10 through a lever 12 and rod 14. An arm 16 is secured to the rod and is dependent therefrom. Mounted adjacent the rod 14 is a cylinder 20 which houses a piston 22 backed by a compression spring 24. A collar 27 is secured to the piston rod 25. The cylinder is connected by a tube 30 to a thermal unit 31 which latter is connected by a tube 35 to the air reservoir 36 of a pressure braking system. The thermal unit which measures the engine temperature contains a valve 32, which, when open allows air to pass into the cylinder, urging the piston against the spring. Should the engine overheat or the air-pressure drop, then the spring moves the piston to the right. In consequence the stop 27 moves into contact with the arm 16, whereby the operator has to exert increased pressure on the pedal to overcome the spring 24 and is so made aware of the unsafe condition. In a modification, two such thermal units are provided, whereby increased pedal pressure is necessary if the engine temperature is below or above a selected working range. In a further modification a spring member is located beneath the accelerator pedal and is operated by a solenoid energized when any one of a number of unsafe conditions exists, viz :-when the engine temperature is above or below a certain maximum or minimum; when the air pressure in the braking system fails; if the engine speed is unduly high; if a door is left open; if the oil level in the. crankcase falls; or if the oil pressure falls.
