Abstract
547,465. Actuating motor vehicle clutches. ROVER CO., Ltd., and IVERSEN, P. A. SCOTTMarch 4, 1941, No. 2920. [Class 80 (ii)] A motor vehicle clutch mechanism comprises a friction plate d which may be clamped between a flywheel g and pressure plate h by clutch engaging springs i and clutch disengaging mechanism comprising a pair of intercommunicating cylinders r, s, having pistons u, y, therein and connected by a flexible conduit t: The piston u is connected by a strut x to a pivoted lever v which actuates a slidable collar m, the latter being connected to the pressure plate h by pivoted levers k and links q. The piston y is actuated by a pedal 2 which is held in its inoperative position against a stop 4 by a spring 3. In this position a duct 7 makes communication between the cylinders s and a liquid reserve container 6. A non-return valve 8 also interconnects the cylinder s and container 6. The connection t adjacent the cylinder r embodies a non-return valve 10 byepassed by a restricted passage 11. Operation of the pedal 2 produces a corresponding movement of the piston u and hence separation of the clutch friction surfaces. Upon release of the pedal 2 the clutch engages gradually due to the restricted passage 11 and the valve 8 permits of flow from the container 6 into the cylinder s and thus avoids the entry of air into the fluid system.
