Abstract
497,226. Hydraulic transmission of power. BENDIX, Ltd., and ROBERTS, G. P. June 14, 1937, No. 16408. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] An hydraulic pressure system, more particularly for brakes, comprises a spring-loaded servo-mechanism automatically brought into action when the hydraulic pressure exceeds a predetermined value. The master cylinder is connected at 13 and the brake cylinders at 39 so that the braking pressure is transmitted by passages 21, 22 and past a valve 26. The mechanical servo comprises springs 56 connected to trunnions on a thrust member 46 and pivoted at 48 to the casing. The thrust member is adapted to exert pressure on the hydraulic system by means of a spring 47 and a piston 36. The springs 56 are substantially at right-angles to the thrust member but slightly off-centre so that the axial component acts in the releasing direction. Pressure fluid from the master cylinder acts also on a piston 28 connected to the valves 26 and to a cylindrical part 25 acting as a stop for a peg 33 extending from the piston 36. When during brake application this pressure is sufficient to overcome a spring 31, the piston 28 is forced down, closing the valve 26 and moving the stop 25 down so that apertures 35, 64 are aligned in the path of the peg 33 and no longer stop the movement of the thrust member 46. Pressure fluid from the master cylinder which acts also through a pipe 17 on a piston 53 and the thrust member 46 now moves the thrust member to the right, the springs 56 are moved past their dead-centre and their horizontal component exerts pressure on the piston 36 and thus on the brakes. When the brake pedal is released, the piston 36, thrust member and springs 56 are returned to release position by the pressure in the transmission system, and the valve 26 and the stop 25 are returned by the spring 31. The valve 26 comprises a cup leather seal, which enters and closes the cylinder 23 containing the piston 28, and is enclosed by an inverted cup 26b which is slidable against a spring 26c and engages a seating 24. The cup is adapted to guide and protect the cup leather seal.
