Abstract

538,464. Friction clutches. BORG & BECK CO., Ltd., and HIGGS, C. W. April 5, 1940, No. 6203. [Class 80 (ii)] In a friction clutch in which a driven disc 10 is clamped between a flywheel 13 and a pressure plate 14, the latter being enclosed by a cover 15, the friction faces are pressed together by springs 26 acting upon levers 22. The latter are fulcrumed on pins 21 carried by the cover 15, the ends of each spring being coiled around a pin 21 and reacting on the cover, the U-shaped central part of the spring bearing upon a lever 22. The inner ends of the levers 22 lie in grooves 35 in the surface of a release lever plate 36 and are clipped thereto by springs 38 ; the outer ends of the levers are bifurcated and engage between a projection 25 on lugs 16 on the pressure plate 14. Springs 46 retain the levers in engagement with the lugs 16. An adjusting screw 33 may be provided at one end of the levers. Lugs 47 are provided on the pressure plate 14 and metal may be removed therefrom to balance the pressure plate.
