545,477. Friction clutches. BORG & BECK CO., Ltd., and GODFREY, L. P. Jan. 27, 1941, No. 1078. [Class 80 (ii)] Relates to a friction clutch of the kind in which a pair of driven plates 24, 25 and an intermediate driving plate 26 are clamped between a flywheel 10 and a pressure plate 27, the parts being enclosed by a casing comprising a cylindrical wall 15 extending from the flywheel 10 to an annular closure disc 14. According to the invention the cylindrical wall 15 is divided by a circumferential series of openings 16 into a plurality of legs 17 the edge of the plate 26 being cut away at 37 to accommodate the legs 17. The screws 18 securing the cover 14 to the flywheel pass through the cylindrical wall 15. The clutching pressure is derived from springs 41, the clutch being released by levers 31 which are pivoted to the disc 14 and engage at 33 pads 34 fixed to the pressure plate. When the clutch is disengaged the intermediate plate 26 is separated from the flywheel by springs, Fig. 3 (not shown) mounted on studs fixed to the flywheel 10. The maximum separation of the parts 10, 26 is limited by a cross pin. Screws 47 fixed in the cover 14 form adjustable stops for the intermediate plate 26. U-shaped springs 48, 49 hold the release levers 31 in contact with the release bearing 36 and the pads 34.
