Abstract

326,660. Kittilsen, C. March 7, 1929. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing. - Epicyclic variable-speed and reversing gearing for motor vehicles, cycles, and other apparatus of the type in which the ratio varies automatically with the load has a slipping coupling or clutch connecting directly or indirectly a pair of annuli, one connected to the driving or driven shaft, with which gear integral planet wheels on a carrier secured to the driven or driving shaft; gearing for obtaining an invariable reduced drive, adapting the engine to be used as a brake, may be incorporated. A flywheel 3 and drum 2, Fig. 1, are secured to the engine or driven shaft and a shaft 9 to the driven or engine shaft. A carrier 13 secured to the shaft 9 carries planet wheels 5, 6 secured together and gearing respectively with a toothed ring 4 on the drum 2 and a ring 7 on a drum 8 connected by a Weston clutch 17<a> to the drum 2. A spring 18 bearing on a presser plate 19 maintains clutch engagement. A brakedrum 15 is secured to a sleeve 14 on the drum 8. Drive is solid until increase of load causes slip of the clutch and reduction of gear. Disengagement of the clutch by the lever 23 and application of the brake shoes &c. 16 to the drum 15, which may be effected in one operation, gradually brings the shaft 9 to rest and reverses its direction of rotation. In a simpler construction for use on cycles, the clutch 17<a> is replaced by a spring washer connecting the driving axle with the drum 8, and the brake drum providing for reverse drive and braking is dispensed with. The modified gear shown in Fig. 3 embodies the features of that shown in Fig. 1 and, in addition, the planets 6 engage a sun-wheel 100 on a sleeve 101 which is connected bv a clutch 102a to the drum 8 and carries an additional brake-drum 107. The clutch-spring 18 and lever 23 control both clutches simultaneously. Clutch disengagement and application of the brake shoes 104 stations wheel 100, so that the engine and drum 2 are geared to the shaft 9 without automatic load-control and the engine can be used for braking. Similar results are obtainable with the gear shown in Fig. 5, in which large planet-wheels 5, 6 are mounted on eccentrics on the shaft 9, which is now connected to the engine, the drum 2 being secured to the driven shaft 33. The clutch 17<a> connects the drum 8 with an intermediate drum 200, which is connected to the drum 2 by epicyclic gearing comprising planet-wheels 37 carried by the drum 2, an annulus 36 on the drum 200, and a sun-wheel 100 on the driving-shaft 9. Brakes 16, 104 may be applied to the drums 8, 200 respectively, and the clutch 17<a> is actuated by levers 42 operated from the lever 23. When the clutch is released, application of the brakes 16, 104 effects reverse drive and non-automatic drive respectively.
