Abstract

The unit consists basically of inner and outer annular gear teeth 11 and 12 and gear wheels 9. Gear teeth 11 and 12 being of unitary construction with members 4 and 2 respectively. Gear wheels 9 are locked up under normal operation with the carrier 8 connected to the members 2 by pawls 10, hence the drive is transmitted via gear teeth 12, pawls 10 to driven member 4 via gear teeth 11. With locking pawls 10 disengaged the gear wheels 9 are free to rotate when a torque is applied via sprocket 1. The direction of rotation of the drive axle 6 is reversed as a result of the now rotating gear wheels. A sprocket 1 is fixed to driving member 2. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Reversible drive This device relates to a reversible final drive gear.
Reverse gear is a standard feature on most vehicles and is normally an integral part of the gear box itself.
The present device sets out to enable vehicles without integral reverse gear fitted, normally motor cycles, to have a reversible final drive by direct incorporation into the sprocket/axle drive.
WITH REFERENCE TO FIGURES 1 AND 2 A sprocket type final drive 1 is suitably fixed to the driving member 2 with bolts 3.
The driving member 2 is borne by bearing 5 which is located on driven member 4. The driven member 4 is secured to the axle 6 by nuts 7. The carriage member 8 is a complete casing and houses gear wheels 9 and pawls 10. The carriage member 8 is located between members 2 and 4 in such a fashion as to permit gear wheels 9 and pawls 10 to mesh with annular gear teeth 11 and 12 respectively, the carriage member 8 is retained by ring 13. A pawl operating plate 14 is secured to carriage member 8 by screws 15.
With reference to Fig. 1. With pawls 10 engaged, the driving force is transmitted directly to the axle in the direction of the applied force. With pawls 10 Fig.2. disengaged the gear wheel g are free to rotate driving the axle mounted member 4 in the opposite direction to the applied force. The pawls engaged/disengaged position is maintained by a spring loaded ball arrangement (not shown) which is recessed into the body of the carriage member 8. A non maintained contact pawl operating device acts upon pawl plate teeth 16, this has not been included in the specification.
1. A reverse gear incorporated into the final drive sprocket with particular emphasis on the Honda type ATC tricycles and OD DESSY off the road, utility/sporting vehicles.
2. A reverse gear employing the previously described principle but varying in physical dimensions and appearance due to design modifications necessary to fix the device to different vehicles.
3. A reverse gear as in Claim 1 where the pawl locks the gear wheel directly and in fact is integral with the gear wheel assembly.
