Abstract
1483731 Vehicle hub reduction gearing; vehicle brakes KIRKSTALL FORGE ENG Ltd 9 Oct 1974 [15 Oct 1973] 47973/73 Heading F2E [Also in Division B7] In a vehicle axle arrangement including a hub rotatably mounted on an axle casing with epicyclic gearing driven by the axle drive shaft for driving the hub, there is provided a disc brake comprising two sets of discs mounted on respective relatively rotatable parts of the axle. As shown in Fig. 1 a hub reduction epicyclic gearing 12 comprises three planet gears 18a carried by carrier 18, the gears meshing with sun gear 17 on drive shaft 15 and with an annulus gear 19 supported by carrier 20 fixed to axle tube 10. Outboard housing member 28 carries bearings 36, 38 for supporting the planet carrier 18 and wheel hub 13, the tubular part 37 of wheel hub 13 being splined to carrier 18. An oil seal 39 between carrier 18 and wheel hub 13 and plug 40 seals the outboard end of the housing which contains oil. The brake comprises one set of discs 46 splined to sun gear 17 and another set 48 which are notched at their outer peripheries and located against rotation by pins 49 received in aligned apertures in abutment ring 26 and gear carrier 20. An annular thrust plate 50 is also supported by the pins 49 and also by a further series of pins 51 received in the thrust plate 50 and abutment ring 26. Springs 52 urge the thrust plate away from the abutment ring 26 thus maintaining the brake in a disengaged state. Heads 59 of pins 58 extending through a cross-shaft 53 engage thrust surfaces 60 of plate 50. The cross shaft has an arm 54 which is rotated in an anti-clockwise direction against force of spring 55 for actuation of the disc brake by means of an hydraulic actuator 56. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, the planet carrier 71 is located by bearings 73, 75 outboardly and inboardly of the gearing respectively. The brake comprises one set of discs 84 splined to the sun gear 69 and a further set of discs 85 received on internal splines 86 within the planet carrier 71. A thrust plate 89 also engages splines 86 and is movable axially thereof by a lever 96 to force the plates 84, 85 into engagement against abutment ring 87.
