Abstract

1434845 Vehicle wheel hub assemblies HAMWORTHY ENG Ltd 15 Aug 1974 [7 Sept 1973] 42170/73 Heading B7H [Also in Division F2] A wheel hub assembly for a vehicle comprises a rotatably mounted wheel hub 3 arranged to be driven by a half-shaft 2 through an epicyclic gear train including a sun gear 7, planet gears 5, and a ring gear 8, the assembly further comprising a disc brake assembly disposed immediately adjacent to, and inboard of, the epicyclic gear train. As illustrated, the brake assembly includes respective pluralities of brake discs coupled to the sun gear and the ring gear by splines. In operation of the brake assembly, pressurized hydraulic fluid supplied to a chamber 14 through a pipe 15 moves 5 piston 13 to force the brake discs against a reaction member formed by an end face of a carrier 6 carrying the planet gears. The piston 13 is biased to its inoperative position by means of springs 21. The carrier 6, together with the planet gears 5, may be removed from the wheel hub assembly to allow service access to the brake discs.
