1396978 Differential gear ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN AG 5 Dec 1972 [18 Dec 1971] 56071/72 Heading F2D In a locking differential of the kind in which side bevel wheels 15, 16 are axially displaceable on output shafts 44 and coact with multipledisc brakes, and the casing 1 has longitudinal grooves 5 to receive projections on alternate brake discs, the casing is open at one end, where it receives a cover 2, and the grooves 5, which may be open to the exterior of the casing over a part 8 of their length, extend to the open end of the casing and receive also the ends of the shaft or crossed shafts 10, 20 carrying the pinions 12 which shafts have inclined surfaces 13, 14 at their ends to correspond with inclined side walls of the grooves 5. The arrangement provides for lateral floating of the shafts 10, 20 to avoid the necessity for individual adjustment of the brake on each side of the gear set. As shown in the upper half of Fig. 1, the discs 18, 21 are held under pressure against an abutment ring 24 in a groove 25 by a plate spring 31, and axial displacement of a side wheel due to tooth reaction as transmitted torque increases is effective through a plate spring 30 on a portion 29 of a plate 28 to reduce the braking. An alternative arrangement shown in the lower half of the figure dispenses with the ring 24 and spring 30 and is such that braking is increased in response to increased transmitted torque. The outer faces of the pinions 12 may have spherical or planar surfaces backed by correspondingly shaped thrust washers.
