Abstract

1360737 Differential gears RHEINSTAHL AG 4 Feb 1972 [19 Feb 1971] 5248/72 Heading F2D A differential gear provided between an input shaft and two or more output shafts to driven wheel axles of a vehicle is so arranged that the ratio of the torques transmitted to each output shaft is the same as the ratio of the loads on each axle driven by said shafts. An input shaft 2 has a differential housing 4, with an interposed web 3, secured to its end 2a by bolts 5. Bolts 6 fixed between the housing 4 and web 3 mount bevel pinions 7 which connect bevel wheels 8, 9 on an output shaft 15 and a hollow concentric output shaft 10. The shaft 10 drives through equalizing gearing half shafts of a steerable axle while the inner shaft 15 drives through to a rigid axle and since the force on the two sides of the pinions 7 is equal, the torque transmitted to the shafts 15, 10 is proportional to the pitch diameter of the bevel wheels 8, 9 and the ratio between the torque and thus the diameters is arranged to equal the ratio between the loads on the axles. If three driven shafts are provided the shaft 15 drives through a similar differential to the second and third axles.
