1443352 Automatic adjusters; internal shoe drum brakes GIRLING Ltd 2 July 1974 49930/75 Divided out of 1443351 Heading F2E The off position of a shoe 1 of an internal shoe drum brake is adjusted automatically by an adjuster comprising a strut 4 pivotally mounted about a pin 5 which passes with clearance through an elongated hole 6 in the web of the shoe 1, the outer end of the strut 4 being arcuate and formed with teeth 7 for co-operation with a knurled disc 8 fixed to the web; a post 10 fixed in the stationary back plate of the brake passes with clearance through an arcuate slot 9 in the strut 4 offset from the pin 5, the strut 4 being resiliently urged into engagement with the knurled disc 8 by a bowed spring 11. When the brake is applied the shoe 1 moves to take up the clearance between the post 10 and the slot 9-if owing to wear of the shoe lining there is continued outward movement of the shoe 1, and movement of the strut 4 is prevented by the post 10, then there is relative sliding movement between the pin 5 and the hole 6 and the strut 4 is disengaged from disc 8. The strut 4 is then caused to move angularly owing to the offset disposition of the pin 5 and the post 10 and on release of the brake the strut 4 takes up a fresh adjusted position in its engagement with the disc 8. The brake illustrated has a single ended wheel cylinder 2 in which works a piston to actuate shoe 1-the other shoe 3 is actuated by a similar single ended wheel cylinder.
