Abstract

1450775 Slack-adjusters; spot-type disc brakes GIRLING Ltd 25 Feb 1974 [16 March 1973] 12869/73 Heading F2E In an hydraulically-operated brake of the kind in which a friction element is brought into engagement with a rotor to be braked by an hydraulically operated member and which incorporates an automatic adjuster, the latter comprises a strut which extends between the hydraulically-operated member, e.g. piston 5 and a second member of the brake, e.g. piston 8, the two members moving relatively on application of the brake, and a first part of the strut is formed by a lever 11 which is pivotally mounted at 17 on a second part of the strut, e.g. push rod 14, each of the parts engaging one each of the members 5 and 8; the lever 11 is normally held against angular movement with respect to the second part 14 by engagement with a toothed element 13 rigid with one of the members (as shown, piston 5), means such as a spring 21 being incorporated for normally urging the lever 11 into engagement with the toothed element 13; the arrangement is such that, when relative movement between the members 5, 8, in the application of the brake exceeds a predetermined value due to wear of the friction element, the lever 11 and toothed element 13 are initially disengaged to permit the lever 11 to move angularly (clockwise) so that, when the brake is released, the lever 11 engages a new part of the toothed element 13 to increase the total length of the strut and member assembly 5 to maintain a substantially constant clearance between friction element and rotor. As shown, the rotor is a disc 3 and the second piston 8 applies a second friction pad 9 by means of a caliper 6. The brake may be applied by a hand lever 23 which rotates a cam 22 which engages push rod 14. When wear of the pads is insufficient, lever 11 and toothed element 13 remain engaged, but the teeth on lever 11 slide outwards on the teeth on element 13 during application, and inwards again on release.
