Abstract

1533857 Disc brake pads GIRLING Ltd 15 March 1976 [10 April 1975] 14856/75 Heading F2E A disc brake pad and shoe assembly comprises a pad 1 with a longitudinal projection 2 of dovetail section on its rear face, a shoe 3 having a longitudinal dovetail-sectioned slot closed at one end and open at the other to receive the projection 2, and a keeper assembly 4 attached to the shoe 3 and in an operative position resiliently urging the pad 1 longitudinally into abutment with the closed end of the slot, the keeper assembly 4 comprising a keeper member 5 and a clamping member 6 and one or more bolts 7, one of which members 5 or 6 is resilient, and slackening of the bolt(s) 7 allowing the keeper member 5 to be moved in a direction perpendicular to the rear face of the pad 1 to a retracted position in which withdrawal of the pad 1 (for replacement purposes) is permitted. In the embodiment illustrated the keeper member comprises a curved rigid plate 5 and the clamping member comprises a spring plate 6, and there is a pair of bolts 7 which are screwed through a flange 8 of the shoe 3 for clamping plate 5 between plate 6 and flange 8. As the bolts 7 are tightened a tongue 10 of plate 5 presses against pad projection 2. To remove the pad 1 the bolts 7 are slackened until pins 9 extending transversely through their exposed inner ends engage the flange 8. This allows release of keeper plate 5 which can then be moved to allow withdrawal of pad 1, the plate 5 being retained on the shoe 3 by a projection 11 which engages plate 6. The dovetail projection 2 may be reinforced by metallic elements extending along the dovetail surfaces, or the projection may be provided on a metallic backing plate to a friction element is secured. In an alternative construction the keeper plate 5 is made resilient and the plate 6 rigid.
