Blocks and shoes. -In a brake block for railway, tramway and vehicles of the kind which is adapted to co-operate with a flat brake disc and is provided with a renewable friction covering of fibrous material impregnated with an artificial resin or similar substance and hardened, the friction covering is provided on its rear surface with a flat projection of dove-tail or equivalent cross - section adapted to engage a correspondingly shaped recess in the carrier, the projection forming a unitary strip extending in the longitudinal direction of the covering and substantially tangentially to the direction of the thrust arising when the brake is operated. In the construction shown, the carrier 31 is cast with eyes 32 for attachment of the brake rigging and with a longitudinal recess 33 having inclined edges designed to receive the projections 45 on the rear of the friction covering 43, which is of substantially the same outline as the carrier. A filling-piece 34 having one edge 36 undercut is attached by rivets or screws 35 to fill one end of the recess 33, while an adjustable supplementary piece 37 also having an undercut edge 36a is adapted to be secured at the opposite end of the recess 33 by means of bolts 39 screwing into extensions 44 of the carrier. At its rear the piece 37 is provided with a hook 40 slidable in a slot 42 in the carrier and having an inclined surface coacting with an inclined surface 41 on the carrier so that, when the bolts 39 are tightened, the projection 45 is securely gripped by the undercut edges 36, 36<a> and at the same time the piece 37 is drawn towards and clamped against the carrier 31. Various modifications are described in which the projection 45 is of wedge shape and has its longitudinal edges bevelled to co-operate with the undercut edges of side strips attached to the carrier, the wedge being forced into position either by means of adjustable pieces similar to the parts 37 of the construction previously described or by means of wedges driven transversely across the carrier. In another modification the projection 45 is made of double wedge shape with the object of more effectively taking up the braking stresses when the vehicle runs forwards or backwards.
