Abstract

Compensating for wear.-In an automatic slackadjuster for railway brakes &c., comprising a slotted and internally toothed segment a interposed between two parts of a brake gear the teeth of the segment being engaged by a pin b on the brake rod d, the correct action of the mechanism is ensured by means allowing first free movement and then retarded movement of the brake rod d. In one arrangement, a pad l is pressed against the rod d by a roller m mounted on a bracket o fixed to the vehicle chassis. The pad moves freely with the rod till lugs p on the pad abut against the roller or the bracket, when the friction between the stationary pad and the rod retards the latter. The pad may be pivoted to a lever which is pivoted to the bracket o, stops being provided on the pad. The pad p may be provided with an upward extension to which is pivoted a cam having a balance weight and adapted to press on a second pad above the rod d, the brake rod being gripped between the two pads.
