647,046. Brake slack adjusting mechanism. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., and BRACKENBURY, A. G. Oct. 6, 1948, No. 26034. [Class 103 (i)] In brake transmission gear of the type in which each brake rod is provided with relatively movable members 9, 10 by the adjustment of which the effective length of the rod may be varied to take up slack, the adjustment of both these members is synchronously effected by a common operating mechanism actuated by the movement of a portion of the rigging transmitting braking effort to both the brake rods. As shown, the screwed rods 7, 8 are geared by bevel wheels 11, 13 and 12, 14 to a transverse shaft 18. When the shaft 1 is turned and cranks 2 and 3 move to apply the brakes, a casing 21 carrying two ratchets 20, 22 is made to move with the shaft 1 by means of a pin 26 engaging a boss 24, so that the ratchet 20 slips over a tooth on a ratchet-wheel 19 secured to the shaft 18 if the movement is sufficient. When the brakes are released, the return movement of the ratchets 20 and 22 rotate the shaft 18 so that an equal slack adjustment is applied to each brake rod. The operation of the ratchet mechanism is similar to that described in Specification 466,792.
