426,581. Brakes. KERSHAW, A. G., LEECH, K. H., and WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SAXBY SIGNAL CO., Ltd., 82, York Road, King's Cross, London. Jan. 29, 1934, No. 2965. [Class 103 (i)] An automatic slackadjusting device for fluidpressure operated brakes, which may be interposed between the piston and piston rod comprises a nut adapted to be turned on a screwed rod by a sleeve having ratchet engagement with the nut, the sleeve being rotatably oscillated by engagement of a projection thereon with a helical guide - way on the fixed casing of the device. A nut 15 screwed on to a rod 10<1> secured to the piston - rod 10 rests upon the trunk 7 of the piston 6. The trunk 7 is of square section and passes through a guide 8 of corresponding shape to prevent rotation of the piston. The nut 15 and trunk 7 have interengaging ratchet teeth 16 to prevent rotation of the nut in one direction. A sleeve 17 is rotatable on the nut. When by admission of pressure fluid at 9 to apply the brakes, the piston and other parts are moved upwardly, the sleeve 17 is turned by engagement of a roller 18 thereon with a helical guide-way on the fixed casing 2, and if the movement is excessive, ratchet teeth 21 on the sleeve slip a tooth with respect to corresponding teeth on a collar 20 secured to the nut so that on the return movement effected by the spring 22 the sleeve turns the nut thus increasing the effective length of the rod 10<1>. The cylinder may be attached at 26 to the anchor plate of a drum brake and the piston rod to the cam lever by the cross-head 14.
