577,576. Adjusting fluid-pressure brake mechanism. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., KERSHAW, A. G., and SIMMONS, A. W. Nov. 13, 1943, No. 18941. [Class 103 (i)] An automatic slack-adjusting device is embodied in the trunk piston of a brake-operating cylinder. The piston proper 1 prevented from rotation by the engagement of ribs 4 thereon with guides provided in the cylinder 2, carries a rotatable trunk member 6 guided by the endpart of the cylinder extension 14. The piston rod 8 is connected to the brake rigging at 20 and by a pivot 9 or a universal joint to a thrust member 7 having screw-threaded engagement with the trunk member 6 rotation of which in one direction is prevented by engagement of ratchet teeth thereon with a pawl 15. A ratchet sleeve 11 rotatable on the trunk 6 is engaged with ratchet teeth 10 on the trunk by a spring 16. During outward movement of the piston the sleeve 11 is rotated by engagement of a roller 12 thereon with a helical groove 13 formed in the cylinder extension 14 and if this movement is excessive the ratchet device slips a tooth so that during the return movement of the piston the trunk 6 is rotated and the non-rotatable member 7 is thus displaced axially relatively to the trunk to take uo the excess of slack. The trunk is provided with a collar or head 19 by which it may be manually operated to apply the brakes. Specification 426,581 is referred to.
