951,390. Brake cylinders; brake adjustments. SVENSKA A.B. BROMSREGULATOR. May 8, 1962 [May 19, 1961], No. 17671/62. Headings F2E and F2F. An air brake cylinder with a built in automatic brake slack adjuster has the cylinder front head divided into two parts 4, 24, part 24 being rotatably connected to part 4 which is secured to the front end of the cylinder body 1. The automatic slack adjuster comprises two nuts 10, 11 rotatably engaging a screw-threaded push rod 8 axially displaceable in a tubular brake piston rod 3 secured to the brake piston 2. The nut 10 is housed in the tubular piston rod 3 so as to partake in the movements thereof and transmit the brake power from the rod 3 on to the push rod 8 at braking while the nut 11, by the intermediary of a control member 12 movable together with the piston rod 3 relative to the brake cylinder through a distance equal to a normal brake applying stroke of the piston, on release of the brake limits the return movements of the piston in the rear end position thereof. The piston rod 3 is non-rotatably guided in the rotatable part 24 of the cylinder front head by means of studs 7 engaged in slots 6 so that at released brake it is possible to rotate the part 24 by hand and thereby the piston rod 3 and the nuts 10, 11 on the push rod 8, provided that the latter is non-rotatably connected to the brake rigging operated by the brake cylinder. As shown an abutment ring 9 secured to the piston rod 3 transmits the braking power from the latter to the nut 10 and then to the push rod 8. The control member 12 is provided with studs 17 which project through slots 6 and move between two abutments 18, 19 on the part 24. In operation, if the brake application stroke exceeds the desired value, the coaction of studs 17 with the abutment 18 stops the control sleeve 12 and displaces it together with the nut 11, by means of spring 16, axially of the piston rod 3 and the push rod 8. During the subsequent release of the brake the nut 10 is displaced axially on the push rod 8 by means of the spring 14. Rotation of the nuts 10, 11 is prevented while they contact the ring 9 and sleeve 12 respectively by the friction therebetween: A spring loaded latch 25 locks the parts 24, 4 together. In one modification a superable clutch is provided between the parts 4, 24 the end faces of which constitute the friction clutch faces and are urged against each other at released brake by the brake return spring 5. In another modification the nuts 10, 11 on slack adjustment do not rotate on the push rod 8 but ratch over the threads, so that the push rod acts as a toothed bar and the nuts as pawls.
