Abstract
286,217. Engels, R. Feb. 28, 1927, [Convention date]. Compensating for wear.-An automatic brake adjusting device comprises driving and driven elements in the link and lever gearing for effecting the movement of the adjusting-apparatus in which for each application and release movement of the brake the driving element undergoes a forward lost-motion movement then a forward coupled movement with the driven member, then a return coupled movement with the driven member and finally a return lost-motion movement. The driving member 16 which is moved by the brake gear on brake application, first moves idly parallel to a guiding member 21, Fig. 3 and then strikes an arm 14 and turns casing 12 which carries a pawl operating a. ratchet wheel 10 fixed to a screwed adjusting member rotation of which varies the length of a member of the brake gear. The member 16 enters a slot 13 radial to the casing between the members 21, 14 in this movement. On the return movement of the brake mechanism the casing is turned back again and when the member 16 leaves the slot 13 it moves along the member 21, without affecting the casing. The ratchet wheel 10 is turned either by the forward or return movement, as shown it is turned by the return movement provided the forward movement was sufficient to cause the pawl to engage the next tooth on the ratchet wheel. The member 16 is moved by a link 23, Fig. 1 provided with an adjustment 24 to allow of variation of the lost motion of the member 16. The casing 12 is rotatably mounted on the screw adjusting member which is rotatably mounted on a member 19 of the brake gear.
