Abstract

456,733. Cranks, links, and levers. ROWLAND, T. C. E., 49, Silhill Hall Road, Solihull, and PARKER, H., 71, Hazelhurst Road, King's Heath, Birmingham, both in Warwickshire. May 11, 1935, No. 13866. [Class 80 (iii)] [See also Group XXXIV] Automatic adjustment means for brake operating gear including a worm-wheel associated with the part through which a brake lever operates to apply the brake, a transverse pin in the body having a worm meshing with the worm wheel and having a ratchet wheel or other one-way drive device adapted to be operated automatically when excess motion occurs, has the said worm wheel mounted within a body itself mounted on the brake lever. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a body 3 engages a trunnion 4 on the brake lever 1 and is arranged around the actuating rod 2 over which is screwed a sleeve 5 having a worm-wheel 6 formed thereon. This wheel is engaged by a worm 9 mounted on a pin 8 carrying at one end a pair of ratchet wheels 10 with staggered teeth engaging a rack 11 pivoted at 12 to the lever, or to a fixed bracket, and drawn towards the lever by a spring 18. For normal movements, the ratchet wheels do not move far enough relatively to the rack for a tooth to be disengaged. If, however, due to wear, excessive movement is required to apply the brake, a tooth on the wheels will move beyond a tooth on the rack, so that on release of the brake the wheels and worm are given a rotation thus screwing the sleeve over the rod 2. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, a pair of brake shoes 20 are adapted to be expanded by a cam 21 against a drum 19. The cam pin 22 is actuated from a rod 25 through a lever 24 abutting the end 26 of an arm 23 on the pin. The abutting part 28 engages a screw 30 formed with a worm-wheel 31 adapted to be rotated by ratchet wheels engaging a rack 36 mounted by a flexible arm 37 on a lug 38 on the back plate of the brake. According to the Provisional Specification, the invention is applicable to two sections of a rod connected by screw and nut gear and to clutches or brake bands used with epicyclic gearing.
